What I do know, however, is what others have studied for decades: that how one dresses has an impact on how one is perceived, and what role one is perceived to be dressing for. Over time, as I became more familiar with the norms and culture of my workplace, I no longer felt the need to suit up. Instead of suits, I turned to silk scarves and black riding loafers with a brass horse bit. These were pieces that I could build around, and that, like the suit, made statements of confidence and belonging.

I also found myself wondering what it means to have an inclusive workplace when so many continue to work from home. Although dress is not necessarily top of mind in conversations around workplace inclusivity, it is a crucial part of the equation, as how we set dress codes and expected norms implicates individual agency and self determination.
