As a couple of days turn into a couple of weeks, Johnny and Jesse hit the road together for Johnny’s work he’s asking children from across the country about their lives, and what they think about when they think about the future and the two form a touching bond. But more than that, Johnny’s deepening relationship with Jesse reconnects him with Viv, from whom he’s largely been estranged since their mother died the year before. If 20th Century Women foregrounded the relationship between a mother and her son, C’mon C’mon makes it a notable motif, as Viv coaches her rather hapless older brother on the trials and tribulations of parenthood over the phone. Shot, like several films this Oscar season, in glimmering black and white, C’mon C’mon offers both an intimate look at the familial ties that bind standard fare for a filmmaker like Mills and a reflection on how, between children and adults, kids tend to be a whole lot better at communicating the important stuff. You’ll know every dramatic beat of this true story, but will be swept along all the same. T.A. Lin Manuel Miranda makes his directorial debut with Tick, Tick…Boom!, an adaptation of Rent creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical of the same name. Andrew Garfield whom Miranda saw, and was blown away by, in Angels in America on Broadway a few years ago stars as Jon, a young composer waiting tables as he works on a new show. Writes Adam Green: Surrounded by a terrific cast of seasoned musical performers, among them Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, and Joshua Henry, Garfield gives a blazingly self assured performance melancholy and ebullient, nuanced and unabashedly over the top that pays off on Miranda’s bet, and then some.
